Indian Valley Alumni Look Back

It’s foggy and cold outside now, a few days before Christmas. I hear the skiing is great up in the mountains. But if you’re looking for something to keep you warm until swim season starts again, have a look at this.

I haven’t posted in several months but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening. I’ve been working on the film, scrubbing through hundreds of gigabytes of footage, figuring out what I can use, what I still need, and laying out a “script” and shot list for next summer.

These three Indian Valley alumni (Scott Mendelssohn, Jeff Austin, and Tim Allin) got together at the IV pool the night before the county meet last summer to tell me what it was like growing up in Contra Costa County in the late 60’s to early 80s. They shared some memories and lessons they took away from rec swimming.

This clip doesn’t give much away about the swimming, but it does reflect something that is becoming a major theme of the film; the connections and friendships made through swimming that last a lifetime.

As we dive into 2020, I am still interested in talking to the swimmers and families I described in this post. But I’ll also be looking to connect with more people who grew up swimming in Contra Costa.
